About Marple

Riverside town, where the waters of the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals meet. Marple was once a famous centre of the cotton industry. The mills have long gone but the legacy of the canals lingers on. The waterways, once a grim scene of barges being dragged by tired, almost worn out horses, have become a place for leisure and Marple now witnesses a constant flotilla of small sailing vessels and gaily painted narrow boats, heading along tranquil waters to explore lovely riverside scenery.

With the demise of old industries and the introduction of new technology, people have more time for leisure and what better way to spend that time than 'messing around in boats' - it opens up a whole new world as you slowly travel through some of England's finest countryside.

Marple has many splendid canal features from the past, these include a flight of 16 locks and a three arched aqueduct which takes the Peak Forest canal over the River Goyt. Close-by, there are delightful woodland and moorland walks and from some higher vantage points there are tremendous views of the Peak District.

The town is within easy driving distance of Manchester and just a short way from the Peak District National Park.
